If you applied for employment in California in the past two years, and a background report was obtained on you, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit against the reporting agency and receive $10,000 or more in damages. Contact Lakeshore Law Center for more information.
Here are the key points :
You must be a California resident who applied for employment (or a promotion) in past 2 years
A criminal background report was obtained by the employer or prospective employer
It does not matter if negative information was contained in the report and it does not matter if you got the job or were denied it
You must either have a copy of the background report that was obtained or be willing to get it (to get it, ask the employer or prospective employer for a copy or at least for the name of the screening company and then request it from the screening company)
Lakeshore Law will review the paperwork for free to see if you qualify.
If you qualify, we will file a lawsuit at no upfront expense to you.
If we win, you are entitled to up to $10,000 plus your legal fees.
The lawsuit is against the investigation (screening) company not against the employer—so no need for you to worry about impact on your job
