Depending upon the amount you already invested you might have a suit in small claims (under $3,000), special civil (up to $15,000) or Law Division (any amount up to and above $15,000). In addition to out-of-pocket expenses you may have a claim for consumer fraud which would entitle you to more than your original investment and even may cover attorney fees. That is if the contractor is legitimate and you can even recover from them. There are many fly by night companies. You can also file complaint with Consumer Affairs in Newark.
Answers to any question is not to imply a lawyer-client relationship which can only be after a consultation and the signing of a retainer agreement disclosing what the terms of representation might be.
